Renters Insurance vs. Your Landlord's Policy: What's Actually Covered

It's an easy assumption to make: the building is insured, so you must be covered too. In reality, your landlord's policy and your renters policy protect two completely different things.

Your landlord's policy covers the physical structure — the walls, the roof, the plumbing, the building itself. It has nothing to do with your furniture, electronics, clothes, or anything else you own inside the unit. It also doesn't cover you if someone visiting your apartment gets injured and holds you liable.

Your renters policy fills exactly that gap: your belongings, your personal liability, and often additional living expenses if a covered event makes the unit temporarily unlivable. The two policies aren't competing with each other, they're covering entirely separate risks, which is why having only one of them still leaves you exposed.
