Does Renters Insurance Cover Roommates in Indiana?

This one catches people off guard more than almost anything else about renters insurance: a standard policy usually only covers the policyholder and their immediate family, not everyone living in the unit.

If you've got a roommate who isn't on your policy, their belongings generally aren't protected under your coverage, even though you're sharing the same space and the same risks. If their laptop gets stolen or a pipe bursts and ruins their stuff, your policy likely won't help them, and their claim would fall entirely on whatever coverage they have on their own, if any.

The fix is straightforward: each roommate carries their own renters policy. It's a small cost for each person and it means nobody's counting on someone else's coverage to protect their own things. It also keeps things cleaner if a dispute ever comes up about who owned what.

If you're splitting a lease and want to make sure everyone's actually covered, see our coverage guide for what's included, or get a quote for your own policy.
